Abstract

In the last few decades, the analysis of processes and mechanisms related to human communication, has become one of the key areas of psychology. So much interest in this issue shows that the quality of communication determines the quality of interpersonal relations. Learning proper interpersonal communication is one of the determinants of mental health. This paper shows the main barriers that interfere with understanding. These are: the subjective perception of reality, a mistaken form of communication, paradoxical and parallel communication, and the different interpretation of the causes and consequences, especially in conflict situations. An effective way of overcoming these barriers is to acquire skills in empathy and assertiveness.
